8 Best Snorkelling Spots in Barbados

The stunning island of Barbados is known for its sandy white beaches and crystal clear waters, but did you know that Barbados is also famous for its numerous snorkelling spots teeming with tropical life? The clean and clear waters provide visibility between 40 and 70 feet for much of the year, making Barbados one of the top destinations in the world for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Sea turtles can be found in several locations around the island, with the beautiful age-old creatures often spotted close to the shore in popular snorkel spots.

Barbados is also home to over 200 shipwrecks, many of which lie just off the shore and are easily accessible from the Barbadian white sand beaches.

In this post, I'll take a deep dive (pun intended) into the best snorkelling and freediving spots in Barbados!

Best Beach Snorkeling Spots

For calm, swimmable waters with soft white sand beaches, you'll want to head to the south and west coast of the island. Waters on the east (Atlantic) side are rougher and can be dangerous for swimming.

Carlisle Bay Marine Park

Close to Bridgetown and overlooked by many popular hotels and resorts, Carlisle Bay is a natural harbour and UNESCO world heritage site. This is one of the busiest and most popular places to go snorkelling, as there are more than 200 shipwrecks off the coast here, many of which are easily accessible from the shore.

Exploring the shipwrecks, especially if you can Freedive, is magical, but the shipwrecks also provide a thriving habitat for marine life. Some of the shipwrecks sank back in the 17th century and have created a stunning artificial reef system over the centuries that now teems with marine life.

Carlisle Bay is also one of the most popular spots to see and swim with sea turtles; you are almost guaranteed to see them here. However, there is a somewhat unethical reason behind this. Sea turtles are common here because many of the tour companies feed them. If you're heading out on a day trip to spot some turtles, I would strongly encourage you to visit Freights Bay instead, as the turtles come here naturally.

How to visit Carlisle Bay?

Carlisle bay is extremely accessible as it sits close to downtown Bridgetown and many of the major resort hotels. Bus routes in this area are regular and easily accessible, and taxis are always waiting around this area.

You'll also visit Carlisle Bay if you join one of the popular catamaran tours of the area.

Brownes Beach

The beaches in Barbados are typically beautiful, but this one is extraordinary. The sand is soft and pristine, with special care given to its upkeep. For those who love being at the heart of the action, Brownes Beach is the perfect spot in Barbados. This southwestern stretch of beach has stunning white sand, mellow waves, and plenty of beach life - and, as an added bonus, it's only a five-minute walk from the city centre.

Brownes Beach is a family-friendly, protected beach with safe swimming to suit all water sports.

With its beautiful surroundings, wonderful charm and sense of safety, it is ideal for families to come together. Lifeguards are on duty all year round, which means there's always someone in charge watching over you and your family as you play and relax at Brownes Beach.

Pebbles Beach

Pebbles Beach overlooks Carlisle Bay: a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkelling because of the six shipwrecks that lie at its bottom.

Pebbles Beach is a beautiful spot to relax and take in the views. The clear waters of Carlisle Bay make it a great place for divers and snorkelers, while kayakers and paddle boarders can explore the bay's tranquil waters. Sailing is also popular here, with vessels from catamarans to luxury yachts moored in nearby marinas.

Bayshore Beach

Also overlooking Carlisle Bay, Bayshore Beach is a great place to swim, snorkel, and exercise. It's located on the outskirts of Bridgetown, which means you can see the skyline and historic architecture while you're there.

Folkestone Marine Park

As a protected marine area, Folkestone Marine Park is teeming with aquatic life. The marine park is also home to the Stavronikita Shipwreck, a popular dive site in Barbados that's home to many different beautiful fish and coral. In 1978, the Barbados government sank the ship deliberately to create an artificial reef. This wreck is now a great place for divers of all levels to enjoy, but there's also an inshore reef perfect for kayakers and snorkelers who want to see some marine life up close.

Dover Beach

On the south coast of Barbados lies Dover Beach; a beach known for its incredible views of the ocean and the reef. It's a popular spot for windsurfing, jet skiing, and sailing out to the reef, as at this beach, the reef is a little far from the shore. But many people love it for another reason: swimming with turtles. Turtle populations are particularly abundant here, and the incredible creatures can generally be spotted all year round!

Paynes Bay

Swimming in Paynes Bay is a great way to take in the natural beauty of the island. The water here is crystal clear, and the sand is soft. You'll be able to see all the way to the bottom of the bay, and there are plenty of places to explore.

Snorkelling in Paynes Bay is also a great way to see the island's natural wonders. The water here is clear, and the coral is beautiful. You'll be able to see little fish swimming around, and you may even be lucky enough to spot a sea turtle!

Worthing Beach

The beautiful white sandy beach of Worthing is located on the south coast of Barbados.

Swimming near coral reefs is a great way to enjoy the ocean and see some interesting fish. Since the water is so clear and calm, it's perfect for newcomers and children. And since the reef is only a short distance from shore, there's little danger of getting lost or encountering dangerous currents.

Walk west along Worthing Beach, and the water becomes more turbulent and deep.

Renting beach gear is the perfect way to enjoy the shoreline while staying comfortable. Various options are available, such as beach chairs and umbrellas. Alternatively, kayaks are great for exploring the coastline from a further distance.

Wrapping Up

Wherever you choose to go for a swim and a snorkel in Barbados, I hope you have a wonderful time. There's a whole host of beautiful beaches and locations to choose from, each with something unique yet stunning to offer.
