Eating Vegan In Barbados; A Complete Vegan Guide

Coming to Barbados, I really had no idea what to expect on the vegan food front! I was prepared for a month of eating rice and beans in our Airbnb but was pleasantly surprised by the number of vegan food options available on the island! Some of these took some digging and searching around, as they aren’t all listed on HappyCow. So, for your ease and convenience, I’ve put together a map and list of all the vegan food spots I could find on the island below.

For Breakfasts & Snacks

Epic Surf Cafe

Epic Surf Cafe has a host of incredible smoothie bowls chock full of fruit and veg topped with a layer of crunchy granola, nuts and seeds. This cafe has everything you crave in the Barbadian heat and offers plant milk for coffee if you’re after a caffeine boost!

Coconut Baby Catering

Coconut Baby Catering doesn’t have a physical location and is made to order only; however, if you’re coming to the island for a special occasion or just want to order in some sweet treats, this is the place to go! Coconut Baby is fully vegan and offers vegan cakes, cookies and sweet treats galore! They also offer savoury catering services upon request.

La Cabane

This is not an all-vegan/vegetarian restaurant but does have a number of vegan options available, including smoothies, smoothie bowls and avo toast! You can view the full menu on the La Cabane website here.

ArtSplash Centre Cafe

The Artsplash Centre Café is a non-vegetarian cafe on the South Coast that has a range of delectable vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free dishes. The creamy avocado bowl can be made vegan and is to die for, and garden salad bowls are offered for lunch. A juice bar is also available.

Bliss Cafe

This isn’t a fully vegan spot but does offer some vegan options, such as a vegan English breakfast with beans, mushrooms and toast. An ideal spot for a little breakfast after you’ve enjoyed the sunrise from one of the awesome sunrise spots on the island!

For Lunches & Dinners

Lion's Share Café

Perfect for a lunch stop, Lion's Share Café is a small, all-vegan cafe offering a number of organic & vegan options, including kombucha, salads, wood-fired pizza, and more.

The Green Lime Eco-Cafe and Juice Bar

Based in the Norman Centre on Broad Street, the fully vegan Green Lime Cafe offers delicious options for any meal of the day! I particularly recommend getting some lunch here as they have delicious savoury dishes such as curried chana!

PlantLyfe

PlantLyfe may be one of the most well-known vegan eateries in the area, with loads of excellent reviews on HappyCow and Google! This fully vegan fast food eatery offers “Caribbean-inspired food that just happens to be plant-based”. With burgers, tacos, wraps, falafel and more, there is something for every tastebud here! This is a great place to go if you’ve got a group which likes a different mix of flavours and foods.

The Apple Crate Restaurant

The Apple Crate is an all-vegetarian food truck/cart that has a stationary location opposite the Sandpiper Hotel. This is a great pick for a stop-off for lunch as they have great vegan lentil burgers, rotis, vegetable juices, and shakes. This place is fully vegetarian but not fully vegan, so just check what is and isn’t vegan before ordering.

Fed By Nature

This all-vegetarian food truck serves natural & healthy food, including smoothies, juices, bowls, burgers, & wraps. We recommend messaging them on Instagram for location and schedule changes.

Roots Reggae Vegetarian Cafe

This is a fully vegan takeaway stall above Cheapside market. Roots Reggae serves authentic Caribbean cuisine, which is fresh prepared daily.

Local & Co

Another non-vegan restaurant but with options available is Local & Co. This cafe and restaurant offers vegan brownies, superfood muffins, a delicious-sounding grilled eggplant dish, and a vegan pasta dish.

Local & Co utilise ingredients sourced from local and regional farms, as well as local producers and wild foragers. The menu does change depending on what their farmers have available at the time and what the chefs have managed to gather and preserve in-house through the seasons. Because of this, I can’t guarantee the menu will be the same when you visit. However, vegan options are usually available all year round.

Divine Ghawdess Naturals

This beautiful little bistro offers an all-vegan and gluten-free menu with loads of vegan goodies and treats on offer! You can try burgers, pizza, smoothies and smoothie bowls, buddha bowls and more here.

The cafe has been combined with a vegan cosmetics store, so you can stock up on cruelty-free makeup and bathroom products while there too.

The Atlantis Historic Inn (The Atlantis Hotel)

The Atlantis Historic Inn does serve meat but has vegan options available. As a non-fully vegetarian or vegan place, I wouldn’t recommend this place be as high on your list for restaurants to check out as some of the others in this blog, but if you’re in the area and get peckish you can grab vegan burgers and vegan sandwiches from here!

Heart & Sol

Heart & Sol is a non-vegetarian restaurant located within Sandals resort. They serve a few vegan options, including vegan meatballs, provincial panini with vegan mozzarella, and salads made with sunflower seeds, chickpeas, barley, and quinoa. Booking isn’t required, but I have read some reviews that said they weren’t able to go here without being a guest at Sandals resort. If you’re wanting to visit, I would recommend giving them a call ahead of time to check.

Greenhouse

Greenhouse is another non-vegetarian restaurant located within Sandals resort. Again, I would recommend calling ahead of time to check if you’re able to visit. Reserving a table is also required according to their website. The vegan options available inlcude fruit drinks, chia pudding, chickpea omelets thickened with whole wheat flour, and black bean & chorizo hash.

Supermarkets & Grocery Stores

If you’re hanging about in Barbados for a while, you might want to venture to the grocery stores rather than eating out all the time. There is a good selection of vegan items available in A1 (or Aone), and this small chain also offers home delivery. Massy Stores are the largest in the area and stock most vegan items you could want, including tofu, mock meats, pizzas, ice cream, sausage rolls and more! They also offer delivery and in-store pickup.

Mindful Market

Mindful Market gets a special shoutout as this small but more specialist store stocks a range of vegan groceries and has an on-site cafe with smoothie bowls, vegan cake and plant milk for coffee. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re on the island for a little longer and want to purchase more specialist vegan items such as chocolate, curry sauces or even vegan cosmetics.
